NGC 1097 is a barred spiral galaxy about 45 mly away in the constellation Fornax. It was discovered by Herschel on 10/09/1790. NGC 1097 is also a Seyfert galaxy.

When a star explodes as a supernova it can shine as bright as an entire galaxy. You can see in this in a Hubble image of supernova 1994D, a white dwarf star on the edge of the galaxy NGC 4526 that exploded as a Type Ia supernova.
