VILLA PIOVENE, Italy: Palladio's urban buildings, as well as his villas scattered throughout the Veneto region, had a decisive influence on the development of architecture. His work inspired a distinct style known as Palladian, which spread as far as North America. Villa Piovene was commissioned around 1539-1540 for a Venetian family grown rich on that merchant republic's trade. Based on the style of the villa, their architect is believed to have been Andrea Palladio.
