It is a prehistoric monument that dates back to around 3200 BC. It is part of the Brú na Bóinne complex, which also includes the Knowth and Dowth passage tombs. Newgrange is renowned for its large circular mound, which is constructed of alternating layers of earth and stones and is surrounded by a kerb of large stones, some of which are intricately decorated with megalithic art. The most remarkable feature of Newgrange is its alignment with the winter solstice sunrise. On the morning of the winter solstice, sunlight enters through a roof box above the entrance and illuminates the inner chamber. This event suggests that the builders had sophisticated knowledge of astronomy. Newgrange is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
