We often get asked how much it cost to build our library wall and it was surprisingly cheap. We did not use an Ikea hack because we really wanted the proportions of the shelves to blend perfectly with our wall and window. The top shelf and bottom shelf align perfectly with our window for a seamless look.

We ended up using 1x10x10 pine boards for the entire bookcase. The whole thing was put together with pocket hole screws and brad nails to fasten the beadboard to the backs of the shelves. We used a cleat fastened to each shelf with 6 pocket hole screws that we drilled into studs along the wall.

One of the most fun things was designing this kitchen from scratch and here is one of the most popular features in our kitchen. I get asked about the dimensions of this cabinet a lot so here you go!

In this corner, we put our 42 inch JennAir panel ready refrigerator, but it needed 12 inches of clearance on each side for the doors to open. I didn’t want that space to go to waste, so I asked my cabinet maker to build me a pull out broom cabinet. Because of the 2 inch framing around the cabinet and the refrigerator, the actual pull out feature is 8 inches wide.

Pro tip if you are building a shelf wall to plan the height to land on a factory edge tile 👇🏼

What’s that you ask? It’s the edge of a full uncut tile that is then cut on a 45 degree to create the mitred edges seen in the video. Usually two 60 x 60cm tiles stacked on top of each other 🙌

👉🏻 Measuring from the original homes floor, we build our nib walls and niches to 1,175mm to allow for wall lining, glue and tile.
