Academic Vocabulary Cards
Assessment questions include this language and students are unable to read and/or comprehend the meaning of the Academic Vocabulary in context. Students are unable to successfully answer assessment questions correctly when they cannot read and comprehend these words. Therefore, educators need to make an explicit instructional effort to immerse students in the “formal” language. Students need to be able to make meaning of the Academic Language and Vocabulary words that are asked on assessments.

Implementing rubrics and checklists offer students a visual guide and check to completing a written response. Teachers need to refer to the rubric as a guide and model how to use the rubric to improve the written response quality. Using rubrics as a self-check, partner-check and in teacher/student conferences is also another way to implement. This will help students comprehend the components of the rubric which will help them in future written responses.
