Retinoid Alternatives for Pregnancy
We know that retinoids are multifunctional when it comes to skin health. They help with acne, wrinkles, texture, pores, scars, and discoloration. They should not be used during pregnancy. If you’re looking to still address acne, wrinkles, and discoloration, here are some alternatives. Skin Purging
Purging occurs when the skin is introduced to a new active ingredient that increases skin cell turnover. In this case a retinoid, which can cause oil, debris, and keratin that have been collecting in the pores to now come to the surface, manifesting as acne breakouts. If you experience purging, it usually occurs within 2-4 weeks of starting the retinoid. If your new breakouts are persistent for more than 8 weeks, I recommend seeing a dermatologist. How to Use a Retinoid
Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that are helpful for acne/blackheads, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and overall healthy skin. There are over-the-counter retinol and prescription retinoids, like tretinoin or Retin-A. It’s better to start off with a lower strength or something that’s over the counter and gradually work your way up. If your skin can tolerate it, it is OK to mix benzoyl peroxide with adapalene. You just can’t mix it with retinols or tretinoin
