Irish Republican hunger striker Bobby Sands is elected MP for Fermanagh and South Tyrone in a by-election necessitated by the death of sitting MP Frank Maguire. In a hugely emotional campaign, Sands defeated Unionist candidate Harry West. The people of Fermanagh and South Tyrone spoke with a resounding voice when on 9th April 1981, 30,492 of them elected Bobby Sands as their political representative to the London parliament.
