Harry Averys Castle, Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone This unusual castle was thought to have been built around 1320 by a local Irish chieftan Henry Aimbreidh O'Neil (Harry Avery). Unusual because it has two towers forming an entrance gatehouse with no access to the castle courtyard other than a narrow flight of stone stairs. This arrangement certainly added to the security of the castle but one wonders how they ever got horses into the courtyard never mind other supplies and materials!

Kinnitty Castle in Co. Offaly, Ireland, is reportedly the home of many ghosts, the most popular of which is the Phantom Monk of Kinnitty. My son and I stayed here and can attest that there are in fact many ghosts that reside here. It is the site of some of the bloodiest battles and massacres in Irish history

Ireland: "Barrycourt Castle. This castle was the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, with its largely intact bawn wall & corner towers, is a fine example of an Irish tower house. Extensively restored & reinstated with fittings & furnishings. Both the Main Hall & the Great Hall are open to the public." One of the finer castles we toured in Ireland.

CARBURY CASTLE The motte near Carbury Castle was probably built by Meiler FitzHenry who was granted the area by Strongbow. The castle was acquired in the 14th century by the de Berminghams. They probably built the older parts of the existing castle. In the 15th century it was taken by the native Irish and in 1562 it was granted to the Colley (or Cowley) Family. They were the ancestors of the Dukes of Wellington. The Colleys built a large strong house in the 17th century.
