A few years ago, I started seeds indoors, varieties from @floretflower and @johnnyseedsselected Since then, there have been self-sown gomphrena in my central Texas garden every year. Also known as batchelor button and globe amaranth, this old-fashioned summer annual is ideal for cottage gardens. Here’s how we grow ours with a few tips ✨🌸 ✿ We start our seeds indoors and transplant seedlings out in the field in late spring 🌿 ✿ When they start blooming and plants are still tiny, we remove blooms to encourage plant growth which also acts as pinching ✿ Once plants grow and bloom but lack stem length, leave them be! Give them a couple weeks to grow taller in height before cutting ✂️ ✿ Use the ‘wiggle test’ to be sure stems are ripe before harvesting, otherwise gomphrena will wilt in the vase! Gomphrena is one of our favourite textural flowers to grow.
