Though not mentioned in the series, it is stated in The Ultimate Guide that children of Hephaestus generally have a fear of heights, coming from when Hephaestus was thrown off Olympus by his mother, Hera, or in some cases his father Zeus. This fear doesn't seem to bother Beckendorf as he is able to fly on Blackjack to find Percy Jackson at the beginning of The Last Olympian.

Hera in greek mythology is mother to, among a few other children, to Ares and Hephaestus, olympian deities of war and blacksmiths respectively. The mother-and-son bond between Hera and Hephaestus proves to be a complex love-hate relationship. The parthenogenic birth of Hephaestus is seen as an extended version of Hera herself. At first, she disapproves of her son and even banishes him from Olympus when she "cast him and threw him" out because he is ugly and crippled. She later accepts him…
