There is a campsite at Þakgil and is located between Mýrdalsjökull (Mt. Katla) and Mýrdalssand. The name can be translated as "the canyon with a roof". The road to Þakgil is 14km from highway number 1 is one of the most beautiful "entrance" to a camp site that I've travelled to. The landscape is amazing around the raod as well as further away. The camp site itself will be revealed at the last turn.

LAVA AND MOSS In Iceland the sharp lava is typically carpeted in a thick layer of plush Iceland Moss, which is actually a lichen. It interacts with light in ways that make it appear to glow, a common feature in the surreal landscape photos you see from Iceland. I was captivated by its cartoonish luminosity and texture, as well as how it contrasted with the red volcanic soil. I took this photo from a dirt road that winds its way through this large lava flow. Remember to always tread lightly!
