This summer I read the book Guided Math by Laney Sammons. Chapter 3 was all about using Math Warm-Ups. A quote that stuck out to me was, "Participating in a variety of brief mathematical activities during the first 20-30 minutes of the day leads students to make subtle mental shifts into the world of mathematical awareness and learning." (Laney Sammons also has a book called Daily Math Stretches for K-2 that sounds interesting, but I haven't checked it out yet!) This is why I've always tried…

I'm gonna be totally honest with you...I have sort of a love/hate relationship with calendar. I really really want to love it (and lately I do). I know there are so so so many skills you can incorporate during this time and it really is a good way to start off the day but I usually get to a point in the year when it all just seems the same. I added this "Today's number" routine to my calendar last year with my kidnergarteners but I've really amped it up this year with my firsties. It really…

Here's a terrific post with a wealth of ideas on how to run a math meeting time (think Calendar Math but bigger!). Math Morning Meeting, Math Routines, Morning Meeting Kindergarten, Math Talks, Math Meeting, Morning Meeting Activities, Cool Math, Back To The Grind, When School Starts

Happy Sunday! Well I survived the four day math in-service and I came away with a few good ideas. One of which I wanted to share with you. Some schools in our district, including my own, are using Investigations. I like it overall but there are tons of other things I add from the many resources I have. For the last five years I’ve been doing math in the morning and let me tell you it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Part of my math in the morning is Math Morning Meeting, which…

Great calendar math board for morning meeting in 1st grade! Organisation, Math Focus Walls, Math Meeting, Math Wall, Calendar Math, Math Boards, Classroom Calendar, Calendar Time, Classroom Board

I've loved looking at all of your beautiful and creative rooms these last few weeks! After working like an animal in my classroom this past week (in between all of those meetings/trainings of course) my room is complete. I've carried over the apple theme that I started last year. That made things a lot easier- although it didn't stop me from buying an insane amount of new things! Here are the pictures I took today at school. Enjoy! Room at a glance Grammar Wall (I am an ELD teacher so I have…

Joke Of The Week, Math Meeting, Building Classroom Community, Harry Potter Classroom, Circle Math, Morning Meetings, Math Jokes, Command Hooks, Third Grade Math

Math Joke Monday! Each week, come together as a class and laugh about a math joke! What a fun addition to your Morning Meeting, or a way to kick off your math class. The perfect component to support classroom community building and bonding with your kiddos. What materials should I have on hand? Paper! You can print on card stock and laminate for durability, if you would like. I also like to hole punch the math jokes posters and hang them from command hooks so all I need to do is flip the…
