Yamato Scrub Preserve Boca Raton Fl At the end of December and into January, the Buck moths emerge and mate. The caterpillars begin to appear in the spring months. This was a good year with hundreds seen flying within an hour.

This is cheating a bit on moths found at the farm. I got these moths from about 100 miles away in Minnesota, and I've released about 80 of them here. I hope they'll form a small population that will continue to survive. I thought hard about whether to release them, but decided to do it. [...]

Shed skins. I guess caterpillars are like snakes, shed their skins. These were all over, I was puzzled. I guess the white things sticking out are like a chin strap holding on the skin. Santee CA, San Diego. They sting, be careful.
