The Crystal Lake Modern Quilt Guild is hosting three block lotteries this year, and the first one takes place in April. We chose the Selvage Spools block from this Riley Blake 2013 Block of the Month program. You can download and print the Riley Blake block directions here, but you'll probably want to keep reading to discover an easier way to make this block. The block is composed of four 6" spools to finish at 12" square (12.5" unfinished). The original pattern uses a template and partial…

How To Make Selvedge Fabric - A Fast & Easy Tute This week I've made a laptop case using selvedges and I thought I'd share with you how I create selvedge fabric. When I buy a piece of fabric I remove the selvedges along both edges by folding the fabric in the correct direction to cut them off as full-length strips. It's up to you how wide you cut them, you may want to cut them wider and see more of the original fabric design. I line the selvedge edge up with a 1" line on the cutting mat and…

Well, it's almost the last day of July and instead of a "finish" to show you, I"m reporting on a new start! Oops!! I've been saving selvages in 2 plastic Animal Cracker jars for several years now. The jars are packed full so when I fell hard for this quilt by Jodi on Pleasant Home blog, I knew just what I wanted to make with my precious selvages. (In case you wonder, I try to add at least one inch of "color" when I cut off my selvage from the yardage. Some are less. Some are more.) Because i…

I love how the quilts in Kaffe Fassett's books are photographed in beautiful locations. With the help of my sons Brian and David, we took this photo on the grounds of Fonthill Museum in Doylestown, PA. It was nearly 100 degrees and humid that day. You can't see me, but I am crouched down on the bridge holding the quilt. Afterwards, we went out for smoothies! Brian just completed his Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts-Photography at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.

Tina Craig of Seaside Stitches in Rhode Island just finished her second selvage quilt, and it's a real beauty! It was inspired by my pattern Button Box, but she gave it a new twist with the on-point layout. The Squares are Kona Tomato. Nice work! *** Tina has noticed that making a selvage quilt somehow doesn't deplete your supply of selvages! I've made a bunch (19?) of selvage quilts and I now have more selvages than ever. How can that be?

So, I was thinking, for the month of September we could start working on those Halloween costumes. I am going to share some ideas with you from some of the costumes I have made in the past. And since costumes are so much fun to make, who knows what else we may come up with? To start with, I am going to share tutorials on how to make yourself a Musketeer costume. Look at this incredible selvage bowl by Kathi Price, a talented selvage artist from Frisco, Texas! - Just this morning I realized that you can't use selvages to make one of these bowls because you can't cut the selvages on the bias. Then, ironically, Kathi sends me these photos today! How did she do this? I see more of that nice blue and white striped fabric that she used to bind the top edge of her beautiful selvage tote bag (see post March 11). I wonder if Kathi has any "in-progress"…

I have a few tips for successful edge fabric sewing.. read on! I use a 7" x 7" foundation to sew the 6.5" square. Layout the strips in the order you want to sew them. This block I decided to pack in more strips, so they are thinner. I kept at least a 1/2" of the color of the fabric so i had great placement…
