Snitz pie recipe

...Perhaps those older recipes were even more vague. An incremental vagueness stretching back to the very beginning of time when someone's Grandmother’s instruction was simply “Make the pie... Serve.” Shudder.

Apple Schnitz Pie is a traditional and very delicious Lancaster County Amish church pie that is made with cooked dried apples and spices.

Note: I wrote this way back in 2007 while living for a summer in the Lancaster County Amish community. Snitz pie was a wonderful discovery I made towards the end of my time there. If you've never had it, I highly recommend trying it. It's mainly seen in the Lancaster County Amish (and related churches).

This is quite simply my favorite apple pie. I have been baking and eating it for many years. The original recipe comes from a book entitles Food That Really Schmecks by Edna Staebler, published in 1968.
