Laurent Cars | Frontispice pour le "Tombeau de John Churchill, duc de Marlborough" (Frontispiece for the "Tomb of John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough"), from Tombeaux des Princes, des Grands Capitaines et autres Hommes illustres (Tombs of Princes, Great Captains, and other Illustrious Men) | The Metropolitan Museum of Art
After marching 250 miles from the Low Countries, the Allies fought a series of engagements against the Franco-Bavarian forces. The first major encounter was on 2 July 1704 when Marlborough and Prince Louis of Baden stormed the Schellenberg heights at Donauwörth. The main event followed on 13 August when Marlborough, assisted by the Imperial commander, the able Prince Eugene of Savoy, delivered a crushing defeat on Marshal Tallard's and the Elector of Bavaria's army at the Battle of Blenheim.
