The bottoms are smoothed out with a diamond sander to minimize scratching surfaces (and because it’s nice to touch). The flare at the top acts as a natural funnel for easy filling not only with oil, but with salad dressing, soy sauce, maple syrup…whatever you need to pour easy and look pretty.
