If you've been following our work here at JSG for a while, you may have noticed there's a few tried and true materials that we love coming back to. With a beautiful rusted finish, Corten (or sometimes 'Weathering Steel') can add an earthy and vibrant colour to any scale of project. What's unique about it is that the rust forms in such a way as to create a protective barrier, effectively sealing the steel from harmful corrosion. Art buffs will be familiar with its use in large scale architectural projects such as the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art building in Melbourne and the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart. Large-scale sculptural artist Richard Serra has worked with Corten for many years, with sometimes controversial results.
