Szent Gellért Colonnade Budapest, Hungary Szent Gellért or Saint Gerard was an Italian bishop who came to Hungary and played a major role in converting the kingdom to Christianity. In 1046 pagans revolted and martyred the Bishop. One story says he was put in a spiked barrel then rolled down the hill into the Danube River. The hill is called Gellért-hegy or Gellért Hill to this day.
