Beltaine is one of the four great festivals that include Samhain, Imbolc, and Lughnasad. A ceremonial site associated with Beltaine is the great stone circle at Beltany, Co. Donegal, pictured.

Beltane translated means "fire of Bel" or "bright fire" - the "bale-fire". (English - bale; Anglo-Saxon bael; Lithuanian baltas (white)) Bel (Bel, Bile, Beli, Belinus, Belenos) is the known as the bright and shinning one, a Celtic Sun God. Beli is the father, protector, and the husband of the Mother Goddess. Beltane is also known as Walburge, Bealtaine, Behealtainn and May Day.

Beltane; April 30th- 1st May. This Gaelic festival marks the beginning of the summer with two great bonfires on Beltaine's eve. The Summer Goddess banishes the Old Crone-Winter Goddess for the maternal time to follow. One of the magic turning points of the Seasons, the veil between worlds is especially thin, many of the Sidhe cross between them. The Faerie Queen travels about this night + may whisk you away. The May Queen represents the Faerie Queen by young women who are soon to be married.
