Mark Rothko
Mark Rothko was born in 1903 in Latvia (then, Russia). His family immigrated to the United States when he was 10 years old, settling in Portland, Oregon. He was academically gifted and won a scholarship to Yale University where he intended to pursue engineering or law, but switched to painting.
