Women’s underwear served two purposes in the 18th century. The hoops were also made of linen and stiffened with whalebone or cane. They shaped the petticoat of the gown to the appropriate silhouette. At various times in the 18th century this profile varied from round, to square and flat, to fan-shaped.
Evening dress with court train, Worth, circa 1898. Two-piece black silk velvet voided to satin. Boned back-lacing bodice cut along velvet floral and inset at shoulder. Front and back with cream Alençon lace over chiffon with spangles, short sleeve with lace ruffle, matching skirt with 3 front lace gores over pleated chiffon, and long, square train. Silk lining. Aubergine silk boned jacket with band collar & gigot sleeves and matching skirt with double hem band of brown fur. Tulle high-necked bodice with cream appliqué lace, trimmed with velvet bands.
