Jesus suffered and died for our sins thus we are redeemed; for our salvation (i.e. going into heaven), Jesus rose from the dead, ascended into heaven and opened the gate of heaven for us. In the Catholic Church, the crucifix showing Christ's Body still hanging on the Cross indicates that the redeeming work of Jesus is ongoing, each offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass being literally a sacrificial activity, though bloodless, mediated through the Church and Sacraments.
